NBCAM For
more than two decades, the National Breast Cancer
Awareness Month has educated women about breast
cancer, especially the importance of detecting the
disease in its earliest stages through screening
mammography, clinical breast examination, and for
women 20 years of age and older, breast
self-examination.
Susan G.
Komen for the CureNancy G. Brinker promised her
dying sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do everything in her power
to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became
Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the
global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for
the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots
network of breast cancer survivors and activists
fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure
quality care for all and energize science to
find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen
Race for the Cure, we have invested nearly $1
billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the
largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to
the fight against breast cancer in the world.

This site has a
small collection of interesting "selected" links to other
sites, on topics related to Breast Cancer. Why do I have
links? It's because I'm proud of my website, (including my
breast cancer risk calculator), and I want others to see and
benefit from it. That means I am hoping that visitors will
come here, either from search engines or from other sites
linking to this one.
The Society of Breast ImagingThe
organizational meeting of the SBI was held in Boston,
Massachusetts on April 24,1985 by the 6 founding
radiologists: Carl D'Orsi, MD; Stephen Feig, MD; Marc Homer,
MD; Harold Moskowitz, MD; Myron Moskowitz, MD and Edward
Sickles, MD. The objectives of the SBI, as listed in the
articles of organization, are to: Improve and disseminate
knowledge in the field of breast imaging. Improve the
quality of medical education in the field of breast imaging.
Foster research in all aspects of breast imaging. Provide a
medium for the exchange of ideas among professionals
involved with breast imaging. Provide meetings for
presentation and discussion of papers and the dissemination
of knowledge in the area of breast imaging. Establish a
channel for publication of scientific reports in the field
of breast imaging Initially, membership in the Society was
limited to Fellows and was by invitation, with membership
based on contributions to the field of breast imaging. From
1985 to 1990 the Society grew to 75 active fellows. In 1991,
a general membership category was established, a natural
evolution that provided an opportunity for the Society to
increase its influence and effectiveness in scientific,
professional and political interactions, and in educational
activities. Requirements for general membership are
certification by the American Board of Radiology or American
Osteopathic Board of Radiology and an active interest in
breast imaging. Members who meet specific qualifications may
apply to be Fellows of the Society, after one year as
general members. There are currently 107 SBI Fellows,
including 15 Emeritus Fellows and 6 Honorary Fellows. In the
spring of 1995, an Affiliate Member category was established
for registered radiologic technologists. Affiliate members
now number over 115.
NIH Guide: DEVELOPMENT OF DIGITAL MAMMOGRAPHY DISPLAYS AND
WORKSTATIONSThe purpose of this
Program Announcement (PA) is to alert the investigator
community to the need for and National Cancer Institute
(NCI) interest in a concerted effort to overcome the
problems of display for digital mammograms. The
problem cannot be solved simply with computer programming or
hardware improvements alone. Integration of advanced
hardware, software, and psychophysics research data is
needed to optimize the early diagnosis of breast cancer
using digital mammography. This Program will utilize
the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology
Transfer (STTR) mechanisms, but will be run in parallel with
a program of identical scientific scope
utilizing the R01 research project grant
mechanism (PA-99-082).

Should you get a mammogram?News: For a premenopausal woman, it may actually
increase risk. By Monte PaulsenMay/June 1994 Issue Until recently, the medical
establishment recommended regular "baseline" or "screening"
mammograms for women in their 40s. But increasingly
researchers suspect that unless you are over 50 or have
found a suspicious lump in your breast, screening mammograms
are unnecessary and could possibly increase your breast
cancer risk slightly.

Important Information About Implant Breast Enlargement:
Among the most frequently performed procedures in Cosmetic Plastic Surgery,
Implant Breast Enlargement or Augmentation Mammaplasty
requires careful pre-op consideration and decision
making. This process begins with a careful
Consultation, concentrating on the history of any
breast process, including pregnancies, breast-feeding,
breast surgeries, and any family history of breast disease
or breast cancer. Mammography is also an important
consideration for prospective candidates over age 40,
in accordance with the guidelines of the American
Cancer Society. Careful physical examination is also very
important since physical characteristics of the
individuals' breasts, such as shape, size, volume,
symmetry, skin characteristics, inframammary fold and nipple
position have a great bearing on the achievable
result. Also, chest wall size, shape, and symmetry, and
patient height and weight have a significant impact on the
achievable result as well.
